“Avengers: Doomsday,” originally targeting a May 1, 2026, premiere, will now hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Its direct sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which was initially planned for May 7, 2027, has been moved to December 17, 2027. This seven-month delay for each film signifies a significant shift in Marvel Studios’ theatrical schedule, with some speculating it’s to allow more time for the immense undertaking these projects represent.

These two “Avengers” films are poised to be the grand finale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s current overarching narrative, known as the Multiverse Saga. This saga, encompassing Phase Four, Phase Five, and the upcoming Phase Six, has been building towards a multiversal conflict, with characters grappling with the implications of parallel realities and incursions.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is expected to serve as the direct lead-in to “Secret Wars,” much like “Avengers: Infinity War” set the stage for “Avengers: Endgame” in the Infinity Saga. The current MCU roadmap places “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in July 2025, and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in July 2026. This means “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will now arrive before “Doomsday,” potentially altering the immediate post-Doomsday landscape for the web-slinger’s next solo outing.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, both “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” are rumored to feature a massive ensemble cast, potentially bringing back familiar faces from across the MCU’s history and even other Marvel film franchises, to confront a threat that spans the entire multiverse. The delays, while a test of patience for fans, suggest Marvel is dedicating ample time to ensure these climactic events deliver on the massive expectations.
